As first reported by Bill Oram of the Orange County Register on Tuesday morning, and later announced officially by the team, the Los Angeles Lakers will dedicate a statue to Hall of Famer Elgin Baylor, an all-time franchise great who helped usher in a new high-flying age of NBA basketball in the 1960s with his strength, athleticism and scoring prowess. A prep and AAU star who’d go on to rack up points at the College of Idaho and Seattle University, the then-Minneapolis Lakers chose Baylor with the No. 1 pick in the 1958 NBA draft.

Dealing with New Orleans' non-traditional starting lineup will be one of the many challenges awaiting the Celtics tonight. While the Pelicans' atypical starting five may not necessarily be ideal, there's no arguing against its effectiveness. New Orleans starts games with a three-guard lineup that includes 6-foot-1 Rajon Rondo with Jrue Holiday and E'Twaun Moore who are both 6-4 guards.

BOSTON — Aron Baynes has a very light-hearted, funny demeanor and is often captured in games with a smile on his face. Rarely will there be regular season games in which his value will be greater than it is tonight when the Boston Celtics (34-10) put their seven-game winning streak on the line against a surging New Orleans squad led by their all-star big man tandem of DeMarcus Cousins and Anthony Davis.

Celtics fans to look longingly at Pelicans’ Davis in Boston visit

The local fans can be forgiven for doing a little dreaming when the New Orleans Pelicans visit the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night. You might recall last season, when the TD Garden crowd openly "recruited" free agent-to-be Gordon Hayward during the Utah Jazz's visits, which angered then-Celtics forward Jae Crowder. On Tuesday, Pelicans forward Anthony Davis is on the parquet, trying to end Boston's seven-game winning streak.

The Cavs started fast, but the Warriors still have a hell of a closing kick

Heading into the marquee matchup on the NBA’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day slate, we wondered whether this meeting between the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers — NBA finalists in each of the last three years, the sport’s two glamour franchises of the moment — would be different. While Golden State still sits atop the West, the Cavs have scuffled of late, losing seven of their last 10 and sitting closer to sixth place in the East than to the No. 1 spot … which, by the way, is currently occupied by a Boston Celtics squad led by former teammate Kyrie Irving, who left town this past summer in an in-conference megadeal that broke up the partnership that had led the Cavs to their first championship in franchise history. This time, though — unlike in last year’s Finals, which the Warriors dominated in a five-game gentleman’s sweep, and unlike on Christmas Day, when Golden State came away with a seven-point win — Cleveland would have Isaiah Thomas, the All-Star point guard who came back in exchange for Irving, but who had been sidelined for the last seven-plus months rehabilitating the hip injury that ended his career in Boston.

Players and teams across the NBA are celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, honoring the American civil rights leader on what would have been his 89th birthday, and in the 50th year after his assassination in Memphis. During the Cleveland Cavaliers’ morning shootaround ahead of their marquee matchup against the rival Golden State Warriors, LeBron James took the opportunity to reflect on what King’s legacy means to him, and the importance of continuing to advocate for social justice a half-century after King’s death.
